Ubuntu 12.04 Microsoft Lifechat Lx-3000

Hi Guys, I have a few people asking me about FreeNAS, but also streaming directly from the NAS box. I have used FreeNAS before but just for storage not streaming. I think I have a good idea and methods for streaming, but not entirly sure of whats required on the actual NAS box in terms of hardware. Obviously need a decent network 1gbit lan, 5ghz dual band / wireless.

I need a quick google and saw that people recommended that you use a near server grade dual port NIC, to be able to push the data in uploads but also have the second port for failover if the TCP stack fails on the primary. So, what really is needed for streaming!? I'm currently looking into a FX 4100 Quad Core, 4GB 1600Mhz RAM, 30GB SSD Boot Drive, Dual Port Intel NIC. DISCUSS GO!!!>>>>>>>>>>>>>. As someone running freenas 8 on an atom board with 2 gigs of memory (only 4 x 1TB drives, raid z, iSCSI) I can say freenas 8 runs fine on relatively little memory. The web GUI built into FreeNas 8 took me awhile worth of reading the documentation but it wasn't that horrible.

It's a revision that's a couple years old however, 8.1 or 8.2 or something like that (the first version in which iSCSI could actually be set up through the GUI). I would use Ubuntu Server 12.04 and Webmin myself. But, this server would be used by a friends father who probably wouldnt be able to use ubuntu server. Yes webmin is helpful but can't do stuff without linux knowledge and command line experience. Some of the comments are useful, not sure about Zraid now. I will probably just use independant disks.

But it terms of streaming media from this to wireless devices, and a smart TV. Whats required on the NAS side. I know wireless isnt the greatest option, but laptops and handheld devices are a key part of this.
